The Tale of Peter Rabbit
This was Beatrtix's first book - written first in the form of a letter
which she sent to a little boy, Noel Moore, who was sick. Anne Moore, Noel's mother who had previously been a Governess of Beatrix, saw the potential in the story and suggested Beatrix should have it published. Initially no firm would publish the story so in 1901 Beatrix published it privately. However in 1902 Frederick Warne & Co. agreed to publish the book and it became an immediate success.
In the story Peter is a young rabbit whose mother has told him and his sisters not to go into the garden of Mr. McGregor. It was there that their father met his untimely end and became the ingredient of a pie. However Peter cannot resist the temptation to enter the garden. There, he gorges on vegetables, and is chased by Mr. McGregor. In the chase Peter loses his jacket and his shoes and Mr. McGregor uses them to dress a scarecrow. Peter eventually escapes the garden and returns home exhausted and ill. His mother putss him to bed with a dose of camomile tea. His sisters obeyed their mother and so enjoy bread and milk and blackberries for supper
